You Must Be Loving Your Life in the Rain
As a native Brit, and having been fortunate enough to watch The National play countless summer shows, this artwork was inspired by those mythical, sun drenched, British summer days. When they occur, they radiate with beautiful warmth, like nowhere else in the world. However, the prospect of a unseasonable downpour (particularly when you’re in a park, waiting for your favourite band to come on stage) always feels like it’s just over the horizon.
I wanted to capture the feeling of those nostalgic, hazy, summer days – the colour palette here doing a lot of the heavy lifting, in that respect. Paired with one of my favourite Typefaces, Bonkus, there’s a bit of a retro vibe here, that helps to pulls things together. Well, I think so, at least.
Going National, for The National
Once the creative direction for the artwork had been decided, the band wanted to localise it, so it was tailored to each city they were playing – including a need to incorporate the support bands for each show. I set about adapting the artwork with that in mind, as well for some broader uses – such as social posts and billboards.
As it should happen, going bright and bold with the colour palette meant these posters stood out a little more, particularly on the grey streets of Manchester and London – no shade, they are two of my favourite cities. ⛱️
